History
Jefferson Avenue Elementary was built in 1958 - 1959. At that time, it was shaped like a T. In 1963, the second wing was added, and in August 1999 the third wing was opened.
Although our school was named Jefferson Avenue Elementary, it actually faces Short Street! In 1959, there was already a Jefferson Avenue Elementary on Jefferson Avenue. For five years, there were two schools with the same name. Students called those schools "Little Jefferson" and "Big Jefferson." In 1964, "Little Jefferson" was renamed Sue Smith School.
